CHRISTMAS - WHAT TO ASK FOR WHEN YOU DON'T WANT TO ASK FOR ANYTHING

Am I the only person who feels unbelievably uncomfortable asking for things at Christmas? Surely not, right? If I'm honest, I've never had too much of a problem dropping less than subtle hints to my parents for gifts, and only recently to my partner because he insists; but that's about it. It makes me uncomfortable even thinking about it, but sometimes you find yourself in a position where creating a wish list will make everyone's life easier; so here are 3 tips to help determine what to ask for when you don't want to ask for anything.

1. BE PRACTICAL

The first thing I ask myself when shopping for other people's presents is "what is something they want or need, but wouldn't buy themselves?". This same question should be applied to yourself when coming up with a wish list; what is something you need but don't particularly want to spend money on? It can be anything from socks and toiletries, to phone cases and kitchen utensils. Personally, I tend to find most people like treating themselves if they are going to go shopping. You work hard for this money so you want to get something special for it, thats why you tend to buy luxury items such as clothes and jewellery rather than practical purchases. Those necessities aren't 'fun' to buy, so they get left in the background until you get a chance to get around to them. All those things make perfect gift ideas!

In terms of price and what is too expensive, it's really going to depend on what you feel comfortable asking for and what you think they would be comfortable spending. Use that as a benchmark. Don't be afraid to ask for something much less than that too. I suggest looking at the product not the price. Don't go in with a mindset of "I want something for $50", you may come across exactly what you want on sale for only $14. Great! You get what you want and don't impose a financial burden on anyone.

2. GO ONLINE:

You have a lot more options for where to shop which allows you to compare prices and settle on the best bang for you buck, all the while sitting in the same spot. This will save you so much time and effort. At first it may seem like a bit of a niggle to have someone go online and order, especially if they are not used to technology; however it saves people from having to physically get to the shops and deal with the hectic mess that is Christmas shopping. It also saves them finding something on your wish list. By going online you can provide people with a direct link to the product.

3. SHOP SALES AND PROMOTIONS

Head straight for that Sale tab, rearrange the order from low to high and start searching. I know it can be a pain in the ass. You'll most likely find yourself sifting through endless tacky items that make you go "who the hell is actually spending money on this crap?"; but trust me, it's worth it. Too many times I have bought something full price only to see it on the sales page a week later. You may come across something you've been eyeing off for a while or even just a lucky bargain. Keep an eye out for promotions such as '3 for $30', you can end up with much more than you expected.

I jumped on three of my go to online stores to put my advice in practice. Click the hyperlinked store names below, to be redirected to their website.

Urban Outfitters is a great online store. They have so many different departments ranging from men and womens clothing and shoes, to apartment and tech goods. Having such a wide selection means you can potentially get most of your gifts from the one place, minimising shipping expenses. Urban Outfitters also has many sales and promotions all year round, but especially during the Christmas period. The shop is unique in it's offerings, some items are exclusive to UO but mostly I find they offer sneakers and clothing you tend to see online but can't find in store.

My Picks:

I hit the sales tab and found some cool deals and great savings. I came across some promotions on beauty products and candles that would work perfectly as 'stocking fillers'

I also stumbled on some great savings! A gorgeous kimono down from $99 to $19, and two sweet summer dresses that have been reduced beyond half price, as well as sporting a promotion of 'buy one get one 50% off'

There were some items I found which I loved, needed, but wouldn't actually buy for myself. I'd rather spend my money on a new outfit or shoes.

The Iconic mainly offers men and womens clothing, sportswear and shoes. They also have a large range of accessories. The main benefit of shopping here is the sales. Because they have so much range of stock, things are always being discounted. I usually waste no time and go straight to the sale tab. If you're into activewear I highly suggest this website, they have a specialised department called The Iconic Sport which has a great range of activewear and fitness accessories. Large brand names are frequently on sale too. The Iconic Sport also has its own Instagram you can see 'here'.

My Picks:

I'm not surprised I came across some good deals on activewear here. Stella Sport x Adidas apparel is on sale which means thats straight on the wish list.

On the accessory front, The Iconic did not disappoint. I found this cool Danish purse/sleeve that is for your tablet or small belongings. It's crisp and minimal, and also waterproof. I found a lovely black leather purse from Tony Bianco on sale too.

I'm a firm believer in never having too many sunglasses, which is perfect seeing as Quay sunnies were available on sale all over the website All these things I would drool over but never take the leap of buying, which is why they're perfect gifts.

A great little fashion store. They have cute designs at affordable prices and frequently have sales or other promotions on. If you've been into a major retailer and spotted something you can see yourself in, that was out of your price range I suggest having a look on this site. You are likely to find a cheaper alternative.

My Picks:

Sometimes you just have to stick to what you know. I settled on some new outfits - all under $50. Merry Christmas to me.
